Website for Greatist
A website redesign for the New York City based health and fitness media startup.
The Challenge
Greatist had spent the past 6 years building a reputation as the destination for accessible, down-to-earth health and fitness content. The company needed an updated website that would allow them to showcase their content and tell stories in a more modern and engaging way.
The Solution
I directed an internal team of designers and engineers to develop an updated website that reflected the unique personality of the company while remaining flexible enough to allow for growth and evolution.
The updated website provided a variety of layout options to show off a hierarchy of content and provide a clear path for users looking for specific topics and articles.
The website featured an adaptive design, creating an optimized experience on different devices.
Greatist was a small startup with only 30 full-time employees. Given the limited resources, the website was designed to use a single image ratio across the entire site. Editors and designers could format a single image size for an article and that image would function in multiple locations and sizes on the website.
The new homepage design presented users with the latest posts, popular topics, and features in a friendly, easy-to-use format.
Sub-brand landing pages were redesigned to showcase the unique content found in that section, and express the personality of each sub-brand.
Post pages were redesigned to clearly show step-by-step workouts and lists. Font sizes and text styles were optimized for legibility across different devices and screen sizes.
Feature story pages were redesigned to allow for a large visual at the top of the post. This allowed the team to showcase photography and illustrations in an engaging way. The oversized visuals also brought a distinct look to Greatist’s feature story content.
The oversized feature visual could also be used to house custom headline text treatments. This allowed the team to use custom typography as another tool when creating feature story content.
