Corporate Typeface for Tower Records
A complete typeface based on the logotype for the iconic music retailer.
The Challenge
Tower Records had a distinct logotype which had been in use since the 1980s. However, a complete typeface based on the logotype had never been developed. With the 45th anniversary of the company approaching, the design team was tasked with developing a corporate typeface based on the logo.
The Solution
Using the logo as a starting point, I created a complete corporate typeface for Tower Records.
The logo was originally hand-drawn and had been recreated in a digital format. The first step in the development of the corporate typeface was examining the current logo, ensuring that all rounded edges and strokes were consistent, and removing any stray points in the digital file.
The letterforms in the Tower Records logotype are set at an unique slope. Every glyph was carefully drawn to maintain the slope of the original logotype.
Edges and curves were cleaned up to ensure that the letterforms would be crisp and legible at different sizes.
The finished typeface provided greater flexibility when creating branded materials and allowed the logo to be more easily adapted to digital applications.
The redrawn letterforms also allowed the team to more easily create different orientations for the logotype.
NOTE: The Tower Records font was one of the projects I worked on during my employment at Tower Records corporate. I do not own the copyright to the Tower Records font and cannot distribute or sell the font.
