Recipe App Concept for PopSugar
A recipe and cooking app for the San Francisco based lifestyle company.
The Challenge
PopSugar had created hundreds of recipe posts over the past 10 years, but it wasn’t easy for PopSugar’s readers to locate specific recipes on the site or utilize them in their kitchens.
The Solution
I worked with the Creative Director and Dev teams to design an app that allowed users to search and discover new culinary ideas from PopSugar’s extensive database of online recipes.
Initial meetings were held to develop quick sketches and brainstorm how the app would function.
Once the initial brainstorm stage was complete, I created a user flow diagram to clearly show how the app would function.
Along with the user flow diagram, wireframes were created allowing the team to quickly explore different options and approaches to the design.
A consistent photography style was developed for the app. Photos were crisp, well-lit and featured vivid, appetizing colors that show off the completed recipe. Dishes and utensils were neutral allowing the focus to remain on the food.
The app home screen featured a prominent search bar and menu that displayed filters allowing users to narrow their search based on category and key ingredients.
Search results displayed an easy-to-navigate river of recipe images that could be sorted based on popularity and most recent. Recipe pages were divided into familiar ingredients and instructions sections.
The ingredients section let users tap to make a bullet point appear next to each ingredient allowing them to “check off” ingredients as they shopped. The instructions section of the recipe featured clear steps making it easy for users to shift their attention from preparation to reading the screen. The section also features a fixed “next step” arrow that could be tapped to jump from one step to the next.
