The Challenge

Key Curriculum Press had a small and passionate user-base for their Sketchpad mathematics software, but wanted to expand adoption into more classrooms.

The Solution

I worked with a team of engineers to develop a web-based lesson plan tool that allowed teachers to plan and share their curriculum for the school year while easily integrating the Sketchpad software package into their weekly lessons.

We began the project by talking to teachers and understanding how they organize their lesson plans and classrooms. We also examined several printed lesson plan templates and online lesson plan organizers.

We took our learnings from the research phase and built initial wireframes showing how the different pieces link together and allowing the team to visualize the user flow.

The log-in page featured a background image showing the beauty of geometry in nature, alluding to how Key Curriculum Press’s Sketchpad software illustrates mathematics in a visual way.

The home page featured an overview of the teacher’s lesson plans and quick links to the current lesson being used in their classroom..

The search functionality allowed teachers to search for lessons or lesson plans based on grade level, curriculum, course, and topic. Each lesson was displayed in a horizontal preview mode that could be expanded to review details. Once expanded, the lesson could be either downloaded or added to a lesson plan.

Searching for lessons based on specific curriculum produced results organized by specific chapters and sections. This allowed teachers to easily build lesson plans based on the textbook they’re using in their classroom

Teachers could create lesson plans from scratch or by customizing a pre-created Lesson plan. Lesson plans were organized based on specific dates entered by the teacher. This allowed teachers to organize lessons around their individual school-year calendar and teaching style.

Clicking on the date icon brought up a calendar overlay that allowed teachers to easily organize lessons based on specific dates within their school-year calendar.

Light social functionality allowed teachers to share lesson plans and school-year plans with their colleagues.
